The author introduces us to Zoe Bentley, a forensic psychologist who is good at her job but doesn’t feel she gets the recognition she deserves. Tatum Grey is an FBI agent, “promoted” to his current position due ...more
Some of the best mystery-thriller Chicago books are authored by Sara Paretsky--suggesting readers start with those if they haven't already read them.
I loved this book, it was my pick of the Kindle First books for July- I did not even have to agonize over the choices this month, loved the brief description.
Zoe and Tatum make a great team, albeit not exactly willingly. There is a lot of humor spread throughout the pages making this a fun read even though it's about a serial killer. Looking forward to the next book.
Zoe is a psychologist who is working as a profiler with the FBI. She met her first killer at the age of fourteen, but no one took her seriously. As she gets closer to this current killer she starts to see a connection from the person who got away from her when she was a teen. Will people listen to her this tim ...more
This was my Amazon First choice for July. Zoe Bentley is a forensic psychiatrist who is a civilian consultant for the BAU. She has been fascinated by serial killers since coming into contact with one, when she was fourteen. Agent Tatum Gray was just 'promoted' to Quantico from L.A., after making too many waves.
Tatum and Zoe are sent to Chicago to consult with police about a bizarre serial killer known as the Strangling Undertaker. He's alre ...more
I found the characters endearing and made you care what was going to happen to them next, the story draws you in with ...more
The majority of this book is set in present day, but there are a few chapters that take place in 1997, when Zoe is a teen and there have been multiple killings in her small town. I actually liked those chapters the most, because Zoe seems to have a lot more personality. Present day Zoe seems to look fo ...more
I will definitely read more of this author as well.
The storyline opens with a serial killer is preparing to kill, embalm, and post-mortem rape a prostitute. A scene like this occurs more than once in the novel. While these scenes are explicit, they did not excessively gory or even titillating. The novel is dark as Criminal Minds on TV is dark. If you like Criminal Minds, there’s a very good chance that you will like this novel. If you don’t like Criminal Minds, you probably will not like this no ...more
Firstly, it was nice to have a protagonist (in this type of novel) that wasn’t completely self destructive. Zoe is haunted, but doesn’t make the kind of self destructive decisions I’ve seen other characters make.
The plot feels very different than other thrillers. It did not progress in an expected manner. I expected the two timelines in the book to intertwi ...more
This was a Kindle First pick which I tried unsuccessfully to love. The serial killer storyline is interesting and well-conceived, including the killer’s creepy POV chapters.
The biggest hurdle were the not-very-likable protagonists, which drove me to speed-read through their chapters. Tatum is a cliche maverick FBI agent in trouble with his superiors. Also, Zoe fits the mold of a now-stock, serial killer character. She is an assertive, intelligent woman with a ...more
This was Amazon Kindle First and thankfully free. It never ceases to amaze me when there are so many really good authors out there that many of these offerings are so second rate. This was like a tepid version of Criminal Minds and should therefore with serial killer material have been exciting. It was about as exciting as watching paint dry. The prose was often turgid and so full of unnecessary detail that it bored me to tears. Who cares if Zoe Bentley liked her co ...more
This was an amazing experience! Helping the FBI and the Chicago PD try to catch a serial killer with a twisted fantasy, Zoe Bentley is teamed up with Agent Tatum Gray. An eerie and harrowing aspect of this assignment is that it kicks up memories of a similar situation when Zoe was 14, which still haunts her and her younger sister. Instead of being detrimental to the current crisis they are dealing with in 2016, the flashbacks to the manhunt in 1997 act ...more
I really wanted to know who the killer was, and why he was doing it, which is what a mystery is all about, and I wasn't disappointed. Nor was I able to figure it out; in fact, I was quite surprised at the "reveal."
Zoe and Tatum are likable characters, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with them.
One of my few complaints is that the p ...more
I’m glad I picked this book from my first reads offer, and I’m following the writer for sure.
A very captivating story and although chilling and disturbing to a point, it was hard to put this book away, I couldn’t stop reading! every twist and turn wrapped my mind completely in the story.
One tiny little flaw, I believe is, Glover ... was the po....lize (wink) in Chicago that lousy that they couldn’t get him after attacking Zoe?
Other than that, the story kept my m ...more
My one beef is the title. I get that it's totally appropriate for the subject matter (given the career of our heroine.) However, it's super forgettable and could ...more
What I love about the story is the way the author makes the main characters grow and learn flexibility of thought. What I didn't love was the development of one the two protagonists. This story is told over two timelines. It's well done and easy to follow. However each time line had similar but separate stories. The lesser of the two was the one in the past. The protagonist in the past was more firmly developed. I wanted more about the present day killer. Having sa ...more
